Shipping From China To UAE: Where A 6.8m Roller Rush To Dubai Gets Stuck
To be honest, Shenzhen probably has over a thousand freight forwarders doing Dubai air freight. There is only so much cargo, and the competition is super crowded. Mr. Xu sells coating machine parts in Dubai. He already had three forwarders. First time we talked, he was very direct: “I have three forwarders now. If your service and price are really good, I can consider you.” That sounds polite, but it is also a bit of a test. In Dubai air freight, anyone can give you a price. But when it comes to oversized rush cargo, it is a different game. The real question is whether you can get the long pallet in time.
Mr. Xu’s problem was very specific. The cargo was a set of alloy steel roller parts for coating machines: three pieces, the longest one 6.8m, about 0.75m in diameter, 18 cbm in total. The customer wanted it all shipped in one go, no split shipment. This is not normal carton cargo. Yes, a long thin piece is easier to get through a door than a wide big box. But getting a long piece into the aircraft is not just “push it in.” There are structural beams, floor tracks, and pallet positions already in the cabin. Long cargo often has to go in at an angle or on its side. So you need to check the main deck door, nose door, and cabin handling space with the airline before you promise anything.
The 747-8F nose door opens up completely. Long cargo can go straight into the cabin from the front. The 777F main deck door is wide enough, but a wide door does not mean the loading posture will be easy. You still have to check all this with the airline in advance.
Mr. Xu had lost money once before, and that loss was not unfair. Last time he shipped a 6.2m extruder barrel assembly. The forwarder wanted to save trouble, so they forced it onto a normal pallet. The long part was placed at an angle, and they did not use chains or steel cables as required for heavy odd-shaped cargo. During the second handling in Bangkok, the long part moved under load. The wooden crate corner bracket cracked first, and a gash was knocked into the barrel flange edge. The customer rejected it at the warehouse. In the end, it was ground and repaired locally in Dubai. They paid money and delayed the schedule.
So this time he was very careful. He asked: “What advantage do you really have that others cannot match?” That is a straight question. I told him many small forwarders are second- or third-level agents. You see them all over the logistics parks. The boss runs a team of three or four people. They have some connections, but not enough real capability. They post ads in chat groups and get orders, then go look for space in the market. Normal cargo is fine. But when the customer is in a hurry and needs a large oversized shipment in one go, they often cannot get a long pallet right away.
Our confidence comes from pallet positions and the loading plan. We buy out 20 pallet positions per week from two major airlines. We also have an annual thousand-pallet framework agreement with the airline, so we can lock down space even in peak season. Long cargo is not a normal pallet. You cannot just get it whenever you want. You need to send the airline the longest piece 6.8m, the diameter, and the packing outline in advance. You need to confirm the loading posture for the 747-8F nose door or the 777F main deck door, the main deck pallet build, the dollies, and the center of gravity. If it can go on the main deck, do not force it through a side door. If cargo gets bumped, we can move fast with a backup plan. I would not call us the ceiling, but for shipping from china to uae, with this kind of oversized rush cargo, at least we will not leave the customer waiting for nothing.
For Mr. Xu’s 18 cbm coating machine alloy steel roller parts, I locked a 747-8F nose-door slot on a direct Guangzhou/Shenzhen to Dubai flight three days out. The cargo arrived at the warehouse the next day. On day three, the flight loaded through the nose door and took off. After landing, customs clearance, depalletizing, and delivery were arranged. On day nine, the cargo was in the Dubai warehouse Mr. Xu named.
